The comparison with the pictorial production of the Scottish painter Jacob More, naturalized in Rome, makes it possible to identify with absolute certainty the autograph initials and the date of execution inscribed on the painting. Among the many possible comparisons, the parallel with the large canvas depicting Vesuvius in Eruption (The Last Days of Pompeii) preserved at the National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh is particularly compelling.
