Few artists, whether Italian or foreign, have succeeded in resisting the temptation to turn to their crayons or brushes to paint a view of Rome or a particular corner of the city.
Roman Atmospheres – Views of Rome from the 18th to the 19th century (24 May - 21 June 2024), showcases a unique collection of pictures from two major Roman private collections, some of them never before shown in public.
It is common knowledge that every collector jealously owns a view of Rome, and if for some reason a painting has to be sold, that view of Rome is always the last to change hands. This goes a long way towards explaining why it is so difficult to come by paintings of the genre.
