La fotografia è riconducibile al primo periodo di attività Anderson, precedente quindi al suo accordo commerciale con Spithover. Intorno alla scala della chiesa di Sant’Agnese non compare ancora la cancellata disegnata da Andrea Busiri Vici e realizzata nel 1853 circa. Sul campanile di destra della chiesa si notano le impalcature per interventi di restauro.

La piazza è allagata, operazione che veniva tradizionalmente eseguita in agosto chiudendo i tombini a terra e facendo fuoriuscire l’acqua delle fontane per il divertimento dei passanti.

Al di là della fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, compaiono le bancarelle del mercato che veniva allestito in questa piazza fino al 1868, anno in cui si spostò a piazza Campo dei Fiori
