In questo ironico dipinto ad olio su due tavole, Paul Thiem raffigura una divertente scenetta: un anziano signore si accinge ad aprire la porta chiusa di una cantina, raffigurata sulla tavoletta di sinistra, e nel compiere questa azione viene investito da una forte corrente d’aria proveniente da una finestrella della cantina stessa che gli spegne la candela.

Nella porta appena socchiusa si affaccia una moltitudine di spiritelli che cercano di uscire dall’ambiente chiuso. Questa cantina è raffigurata, come detto, su una seconda tavoletta, delimitata anche da una cornicetta: in un’ambiente chiuso è raffigurato un grande ragno appeso al soffitto.

È evidente il sottinteso simbolista, oltre che umoristico, del pittore: aprire una porta chiusa può portare a volte a conseguenze nefaste.

 

Paul Thiem nacque a Berlino il 2 novembre 1858 e morì a Starnberg (Germania) il 18 settembre 1922. Fu un pittore di ritratti e paesaggi. Frequentò l’Accademia di Monaco, dipinse soggetti fantastici, umoristici e grotteschi.
