Alexandre LIETO
Our painting depicts a suggestive glimpse of Capri at sunset. The sky is dominated by clouds with pink and purple hues.
In the foreground, two figures on the beach of Marina Grande admire the sunset with the stormy sea. Beyond the fishermen's houses of the Marina, the imposing silhouette of Mount Solaro rises in the background, captured in backlight and with blurred contours.
Our artist has given the painting a sense of serenity and transcendence, perfectly capturing the wild and enchanted atmosphere that the island of Capri had in the mid-19th century.
Little is known about Alexandre Lieto, an artist active in the mid-nineteenth century; Benezit cites him as being born in Italy to French parents. He was a pupil of the great Camille Corot, and painted views of the French countryside and Paris, as well as views of the Neapolitan area.
Two of his paintings are preserved in the museum of Nice.
